If you’re an experienced Registered Nurse looking to leverage your clinical expertise in a consulting role, Becton, Dickinson, and Company (BD) might have the perfect opportunity for you. BD is a global leader in medical technology, dedicated to advancing the world of health. The Sr. Clinical Solution Consultant role is a dynamic field-based position covering territories in the Northeast (New York, Boston) and the Gulf States (Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina).

About BD

BD is a company that believes in the power of collaboration and innovation. They aim to empower healthcare providers with solutions that enhance safety, efficiency, and effectiveness in medication and supply chain management. BD’s signature products, such as Pyxis® and Alaris® systems, are widely recognized for improving patient care and streamlining hospital processes.

The Role: A Blend of Clinical Insight and Sales Consulting

The Sr. Clinical Solution Consultant is at the intersection of healthcare and technology. As a key player in BD’s Medication & Supply Management Solutions division, you’ll be responsible for supporting sales by providing clinical expertise and workflow analysis. Your deep understanding of hospital environments, including medication management processes and supply chain operations, will allow you to assess current practices and recommend transformative solutions.

This role does not appear to be a sales role. You’ll be a trusted advisor, helping hospitals address challenges like medication errors, inefficiencies, and regulatory compliance. Your ability to collaborate with sales teams, product developers, and healthcare professionals will be crucial in shaping the strategic goals of your clients.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide in-depth knowledge of BD’s medication and supply solutions, including automated dispensing systems and infusion safety software.
  • Conduct current state assessments and create future state plans aligned with customers’ strategic objectives.
  • Act as a thought leader by staying informed on healthcare trends and sharing insights with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Mentor and train other team members on best practices.
  • Travel up to 75% of the time to engage with clients and support implementation.

Why This Role is Unique

For those transitioning from direct patient care, this role allows you to use your clinical skills in a new context. You’ll focus on improving processes that directly impact patient safety and care, but from a strategic level. You’ll also work with a wide range of healthcare professionals and leaders, expanding your network and learning opportunities.

Is This Role a Fit for You?

BD is looking for candidates with:

  • A current RN license and a minimum of 10 years of experience in an acute care hospital.
  • A background in departmental management and expertise in either medication management or supply chain processes.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills, with experience in consulting and driving organizational change.
  • A self-motivated attitude with a bias for action.

What should you do to apply and prepare for an interview with BD?

If you do get an interview with BD, the first thing I would do is deep dive into their website. The company is over 125 years old, make sure that you at least read about the company’s history. Next I would review their portfolio. You don’t need to memorize it, but you would benefit from looking it over. Pay closer attention to the Pyxis®, Alaris ®, and infusion items, since the job description specifically mentions them.

Make sure your resume is up-to-date. If you have experience with Alaris® or Pyxis® systems, include that. Highlight any process improvement projects or committees you’ve been involved in, particularly those focused on these systems. BD values collaboration and self-motivation, so demonstrating your involvement in these areas will strengthen your application.

Questions to consider asking if interviewing?

  • What are the key performance indicators (KPIs) for this role? How is success measured?
  • How much emphasis is placed on clinical consulting versus sales activities in this position?
  • How does this role interact with the sales and product teams? What does collaboration look like in practice?
  • How are territories managed, and what kind of support is provided when working across multiple states?
  • What does a typical week look like in terms of travel? How are travel and scheduling typically handled?
  • What opportunities are available for career growth within the clinical consulting or sales consulting divisions at BD?

Why Work at BD?

BD fosters an inclusive and growth-focused environment. Employees are encouraged to bring their authentic selves to work and continuously learn and develop their skills. They have excellent Glassdoor reviews; for a company of over 70,000 people, a score of 4/5 on Glassdoor is impressive.

I’m pretty sure we have all heard of BD, and regularly use their products.  Alaris® pumps for infusion? Check. PureWicks® to prevent CAUTI? Yep. Pyxis® machines to pull medications or supplies? I’ve been using them since I was a baby nurse, 25 years ago. There are even products we use daily like vacutainers, butterfly needles, and catheters that were probably made by BD in your unit or clinic. My point is that BD is a large, trusted company with products that we can all stand behind and be proud to represent in the field.
